I am going there in April and staying at the Holiday Inn Express on Walnut. It is four blocks off the Septa Line through town and three blocks off the subway which you can take for the 30th Street Station east to near it.

I am thinking of staying in the Alexander Inn when I go, 301 S 12th St at Spruce St, 877-ALEXINN (253-9466), 215-923-3535, www.alexanderinn.com From my investigations, it sounds like a "funky" hotel with a very good location and a good Triple A rate. I didn't post this before because it is not right near 30th St Station (I think that is the name of Philly Amtrak station, not Union Station, right?) but I think it is near the Holiday Inn Chris mentions, and I gather it is by most of the tourist attractions we hope to see. I know (from info here!) that there is good public transportation, but when we get in, we likely will take a taxi; I gather it isn't prohibitively far/expensive, and we will have luggage.

There really isn't much in the way of hotels near 30TH Street, which is in West Philadelphia. Remember, though, that your Amtrak ticket is good on SEPTA trains from 30th Street (upper level) to Penn Center and Market East stations. There is a Holiday Inn right on Market at 17th, next to Penn Center. Another hotel I recommend is the Embassy Suites on 18th Street at the Ben Franklin Parkway. That's about two blocks north of Penn Center, but the rooms are huge, they have balconies, and many have great views of the Parkway and the Swann Fountain at Logan Square. They also offer a free, hot breakfast. I got a $99 rate last fall.
