On the Empire Service and elsewhere in the NE Corridor (and perhaps in other areas as well), Amtrak costs more on Fridays and Sundays (it used to be after 1PM and then after 11PM and now with the newest price increases may even be earlier on those days). When they used to have round trip discounts, they wouldn't even let you get them on those two days. All of this, I have been told, is because Fridays and Sundays are the busiest travel days. . .
So if that's the case, why are there fewer trains on Sundays? Look at the Empire schedule between Albany and NYC--far fewer Sunday trains than weekdays. If Sunday is such a popular travel day, why not have more trains for all those travelers?
This Monday, the day after New Year and considered part of the New Year holiday, the trains are operating on Sunday schedule. And if you take a look at Monday's trains on the Empire line, for example, you will see that at least one afternoon train is sold out. WHY on such a busy day aren't there more trains?
