I got back to Union Station this morning on a chartered bus from Santa Barbara this morning at 5am. This is becuase the Coast Starlight terminated in Santa Barbara due to Metrolink track work that is being done in Chatsworth.
The trip up was good, we were only 3 hours late...the only bad part was that we did not have a Pacific Parlour Car. This was my first time ever riding the Coast Starlight in a sleeper without one.
The dining car on the way up was all real dishes EXCEPT for breakfast. Everything at brekfast besides silverware was disposable. Then, on the way back it was like this for all the meals. It was not very fun eating steak off a paper plate but this will soon become regular.
Some of the crew members had told me they knew people who worked on other routes that had already started the new Dinner Lite, and they said that the new food was horrible, but they would be bringing eggs back to the menu soon.
I tracked today's #14, it is running 11 minutes late at SLO. It also says it departed Los Angeles 14 minutes late...So I have no idea if passengers were bussed, or if the train was actually brough back down to L.A. sometime in the night from Santa Barbara.
By away, In Oakland we picked up 2 horizon cars (IVB), 1 baggage car (III), and a dome car (IV).
