I would recommend going from Seattle to Chicago.

This way, if the train is running late, you don't run the risk of going through the Glacier Park area after dark. The same is true for the scenic ride down the Mississippi River from Minneapolis to LaCrosse, WI 24 hours later.

As a bonus, going in August you would get several hours of scenic daylight riding the first evening out of Seattle too!

Climbing toward 5,000 posts like the Southwest Chief ascending Raton Pass. Cautiously, not nearly as fast as in the old days, and hoping to avoid premature reroutes.

I agree. Eastbound is the best way to go on the Builder, especially if it's your first time. You get more daylight in the most scenic portions of the route.

AZRailer:

I think Eastbound is the best direction to view scenery on the Empire Builder.

Also, typing in all CAPS is generally regarded as shouting in an electronic form. All CAPS is all more difficult to read.

Cheers,

Thanks for the advise,we are now booked on the 8 train to Chicago. Sorry about the caps, I use a work program that requires caps and I never thought to turn it off.

As an added bonus, travelling from Seattle to Chicago allows one extra meal in the dining car: six meals instead of five. That's a good enough reason all by itself.
