I started a previous thread on a Minneapolis newspaper article on the Empire Builder and Amtrak:

In today's same paper there is a very good letter to the editor about that article. It was good enough to be named "Letter of the Day". If the link still works it is:

http://www.startribune.com/563/story/787063.html

In the print version of the paper, there was a 2001 photo under the letter of the lounge on the Builder. In the paper's text under the photo it says in part "The train is a vital alternative to air travel for people who can't fly due to ill health or in times of national emergency."

The letter states: "Steel wheels on steel rails are the most energy-efficient form of ground transportation. It's a basic fact of physics."

I have heard this claim before, but it is seldom mentioned in debates about rail funding.

It is nice to see Amtrak get this favorable exposure. If the link does not work, I have copied the text and can add it to this thread.
