In a previous posting someone asked if all members of congress get secret service protection. I talked to my neighbor who is retired from the secret service and he says no they do not. The only reason Hillary Clinton does is because she is a former first lady and all the former first ladies get this protction. If she were just a senator she would not. Other than presidential families the only others to get this protection are state visitors and bonafide presidential candidates. I forgot to ask but I assume VPs as well.

A quick civics lesson: Senators and Congressmen do not get Secret Service protection because the Secret Service is an executive branch agency. The Congress has its own police force (the Capitol Police) to secure the Capitol and the various Senate and House office buildings.
Presidents, VPs, and former presidents, vice presidents, and their families get Secret Service protection. An arm of the Secret Service called the Executive Protective Service handles the security of embassies in Washington.
Washington is full of little, specialized police departments. My favorite are the Acqueduct Police, whose job it is to protect the Cabin John Acqueduct that brings water into Washington (and to enforce the 35 MPH speed limit on MacArthur Blvd., which is on top of the acqueduct).
