I would like to fly into BWI this October and take Amtrak to Williamsburg then return to Portland on Amtrak. How hard is it to get from the air terminal to the Amtrak Station?

Hi Wayne,

Incredibly easy.

There is a free shuttle bus roughly every 10 to 20 minutes (depending on the time of day) between the BWI airport and the BWI Rail Station. It's a short ride but make sure you're getting the rail station bus as they also have shuttle buses to satellite parking and the rental car facilities as well.

If you have time, plan to do a little train watching at the rail station. There is a pedestrian bridge with large windows over the tracks and it is exhilerating to be there when an Acela train breezes through without stopping.

I sometimes fly from Charlotte to BWI when I am catching the westbound Capitol and don't want an overnight layover in the DC area.....a same day Amtrak connection from the Carolinas to the Capitol isn't a sure bet with CSX being what it is these days!

One other possibility.....if you would rather try something a bit different, you can catch the Baltimore Light Rail from BWI to Penn Station in downtown Baltimore. You'll have to transfer to another light rail train to get into Penn Station though.....and the light rail would cost you a couple or three bucks.

Thanks--I'll give myself a couple of hours to catch the train. The Capitol has never been a problem for me coming up from Tampa and I dont believe the Regional from Williamburg is going to be a problem either.

The Regional from Williamsburg should be good. The huge congestion issues on CSX seem to be from around Petersburg, VA south to Rocky Mount, NC and sometimes beyond. The delays impact the Carolinian, Piedmont, and Silver Service trains. North and east of Richmond is generally OK.

The Silver Star would generally make it but when you consider I would have to drive five hours (to Raleigh) to catch a train at 5:00am........the shorter drive to the Charlotte airport and not spending a very short night in a hotel is a more palatable option.
