Thanks Henry - did not know Lionel was there. While Detroit is not in the top 100 of our own 'places to see before you die' I'll certainly check it out if we get there.
Coincidently, a couple hours ago I stopped at an internet type store that sells only Lionel. While I model in HO, it certainly brought back memories of Christmas' past to see those orange boxes.
I picked up their catalog - because I'm sure my granddaughter is almost old enough to get her first set (do you have to be able to walk to play with trains)?

I was an American Flyer boy. Owned a 4-6-2 and 4-4-2, both smoke-makers. Three rails? Huh! (But the Lionel GG1 always impressed me.)
I gave my firstborn his first HO set when he was 11 months old. My wife threw up her hands.

The best Christmas I ever had: The whole Super Chief by Lionel. Each unit was wrapped separately under the tree. I could shake it and guess it was a train, but I never new which one. Two engines and a "B" unit. We also had a Wabash passenger engine. The freight was steam (Pennsylvania RR). No little circle to run around either. One third of the basement was filled with track, complete with landscaping, mountains, lakes, and lightning. Thunder too if you wobbled the nearby heat ducts.

Hmmmm -- would that Lionel plant be closer to AMTRAK-Dearborn than to Detroit? The "new" Detroit AMTRAK station is nowhere near downtown any more.......

The Lionel plant is in Chesterfield, MI, about 20-25 miles NNE of Detroit. Don't think Dearborn (W of Detroit) would be any closer, but I don't know much about the area.

Henry -- I just looked up Chesterfield, MI -- it is nowhere near any of the stations on the CHI-DET or CHI-PTH AMTRAK routes!! It looks like it is quite a ways north of Detroit, about halfway between Detroit and Port Huron, close to the St. Clair River. (I used to live in Michigan, but was not familiar with the location of Chesterfield)
