I plan to do a solo long-distance trip from Pittsburgh out west later this summer. But I thought it might be fun to extend my trip to include my son for a last "leg.

Instead of booking just a return to Pittsburgh from Chicago, I had thought of booking a trip through to DC , with a return to Pittsburgh that same day----AND having my son join me in Pittsburgh for this last leg of the trip.

My question is HOW to actually book this trip.

I plan to book a roomette for the entire trip, so I would have a free space available.

I presume all I would have to pay for his portion of the trip is his rail fare. Is that correct ?

So when I purchase MY ticket (at the station in Pittsburgh), I simply inform the agent that my son will be joining me in Pittsburgh for only the round-trip between Pittsburgh and DC. Correct ?

I have never attempted to do this sort of ticketing before and that is why I am curious about exactly what to do.

I wish he could join me for the entire trip , but he just started a new job and has no vacation time accumulated. This way we can use a Saturday to do this. He loves rail travel as much as I do..

Any help appreciated.

Tell "Julie" you want to talk to an agent. You need a real person to answer how to book this correctly.

My new "default" station (EKH) has no baggage service or QuikTrak machine, but the parking is free! And the NY Central RR Museum is just across the tracks (but not open at Amtrak train times. . ..)

If anyone gets the answer to this question, please post it here if you wouldn't mind. That's a good question----I've often wondered how this works. There was a question about this recently on another RR website, and nobody ever came up with the answer.

And there was also something in this month's NARP newsletter that talked about adding someone to a sleeper ticket, and I did not understand NARP's explanation of it. It had to do with the free meal thing as part of your sleeper ticket, and a coach passenger needing to cancel their reservation and re-book to a sleeper (even if they are at the train station on the day of departure). It didn't make sense to me, because an accommodation charge should be one single fee, regardless if there are one or two people in the room. But each person pays the rail portion of the trip. So I wasn't quite sure what they were talking about, or why a coach passenger needed to re-book instead of just paying for the accommodation upgrade.
