Since last night the coach rail fare from WAS to AUS for 4/14 went up $22. It seems this increase goes into effect March 20th and extends as far out a any date I can check. Is this an across the board increase? Announced?

This constitutes a 13% unannounced increase in the base price. The service is so shitty - hardly any connections anymore anywhere I need to go - and the price sky-rocketing. I guess this is how they will actually kill off the LD routes; if they can defeat an enthusiastic customer like me, it'll work in no time at all! I guess I'll relent and take Southwest nonstop BWI-AUS for 1/3 the price.

I am so glad that "dog" has been upgraded to the same level of acceptability as "shitty" (lol).

I know what you're saying and Austin does have a nice airport.

Reliability has improved over CSX a bit lately but for a long time I preferred flying Airtran from Charlotte to BWI to start a train trip rather than lose a day on the Carolinian.

That's exactly why the states of VA, NC, SC, and GA need to get on the ball and buy the CSX "S" line, lease it to Amtrak, then use the proposed federal matching funds to rebuild/upgrade it using welded rail, concrete ties, and as much grade separation as possible. This would give Amtrak a 79-110 MPH alternative to CSX's crowded "A" line. Moreover, if, along with helping to buy and upgrade the "S" line, VA would use the proposed federal matching funds to build a third track along the length of the old RF&P, that would alleviate the congestion even more.
