I have experienced a few but the best one was the Southwest Chief going 90 MPH west from Gallup and we got the crew to turn the lights off in the lounge car and we got to enjoy it longer because we were moving west as the moon was too so a longer experience than on the ground. Fantastic sums it all up!

Here's something else that would be great especially from a darkened dome car in Canada or maybe a Superliner lounge. Often you can see the space shuttle and/or the International Space Station on orbit right before sunrise or after sunset. They look like a bright star traveling across the sky in an arc. There are no blinking lights like on airplanes, just reflected sunlight. Last night we watched the space station appear to chase the shuttle across the sky after they had undocked. This web site gives sighting times: http://spaceflight1.nasa.gov/realdata/sightings/ and it would be really cool to see that from a train in the open desert or Canadian prairies.

That would be cool to witness from a Superliner lounge.
I was lucky enough to travel on the Southwest Chief during a Leonid meteor shower. Great to look out my sleeper window while racing through the dark Mojave and see the shooting stars light up the sky.
