I've taken the train from Seattle to Vancouver several times, but I've always taken the thruway bus back to Seattle. In September, I plan to take the train both ways. It's scheduled to depart VAC at 5:45. What time do I need to be at Pacific Central Station for check in?

Also, I know that Superliners have been on the route for months now, but when I put in my September dates, I get the business class option. I put in August dates and all it offers is coach class. I read on another board that the Talgos wouldn't be back in service on the SEA-VAC run until all the trainsets are refurbished in 2011, but with business class being back on the menu, it looks like Amtrak at least *plans* to have them back in service by September. Does anyone know what's going on?

That's a good question about biz class on that train. Originally what they did was make the downstairs seating (in the Superliners) the "business class" section. But that was stupid, because nothing was different and you paid more. I wonder if they are doing that again? I am also under the impression that the Superliners will be running on that train for quite some time in the future.

I cannot answer your question re business class and Talgos, (but if the downstairs is business class, I wouldn't take it!). However, I can tell you that last May, when I took the Canadian from Jasper to Vancouver and was catching the 5:45 train (or it may then have been 6PM) later that day, I was told at the station to be back by around 4:30PM, as I recall. However, your best bet is to check on the time with the appropriate person at the station when you get in to Vancouver

I've taken the southbound Cascades several times from Vancouver to Seattle, and I would check in about 30 minutes prior to departure. You have to go through U.S. immigration in the Pacific Central station and your bags must be x-rayed (airport style). My experience has been that this takes just a few minutes, so I don't see a problem with a thirty minute check-in time. As for business class, I have a confirmed booking in business for this coming December, so I would think the Talgos are scheduled to return. Of course there is nothing to prevent Amtrak from cancelling business class whenever they feel like it.

Thanks everyone. I guess I'll just expect a Superliner and hope for a Talgo.

Do they offer any kind of food service on the Superliners?
