What's the opinion out there for a "reinstatement" of the "National Limited" for East/West/ West/East travel from St. Louis to the east though Illinois? I believe the demand is there to avoid always routing through Chicago. Any ideas?
ALSO: Does anyone have an inside on the status of routing from St. Louis on to Tulsa for connections west and south?
Thanks!

How are they going to get west of Pittsburgh? The Port Authority transit company of that city turned the Berry Street Tunnel into a busway.

BNSF maintains their railroads for freight traffic unless they have a contract with Amtrak for passenger traffic. Most freight on BNSF runs at 60.

New traffic would mean reconditioning a route, validating signals ... and all that jazz!

Maybe the logical first question is: WHY reinstate the National Limited? Please be introspective and honest.

???? BNSF is not involved. Would be either NS or CSX.

The original Amtrak 'National Limited' will not return because too much of it's route has been pulled up.......major portions in Ohio are gone now too.

One possibility though would be a St. Louis - Cincinnati train that joins the Cardinal for the rest of it's trip eastward....

Or a St. Louis - Indianapolis train again connecting with the Cardinal.

Host railroad for either would be CSX.

Could also run Indinapolis to Cleveland to get on the traditional Water Level Route, but that would not get you to Pittsburg. Not sure how you would get from Cincinatti to Pittsburg either for that matter.

sorry for not being clear.....neither suggestion that I offered (or going to Cleveland) is going to Pittsburgh at all. There are ways to get from the east coast to St. Louis but not through Pittsburgh.

George - I'm hoping you have an answer on this if you haven't seen my other thread -

What's the mileage on the old Lackawanna from the Shops in downtown Scranton to Foster Station in Hop Bottom, PA?

I'm guessing 23 to 26 but don't have anything to confirm that.

From November 1945 Official Guide:

141.5 Clark's Summit

Hope this helps. This is a part of the country I know very little about.
