At long last I have finally posted the travelogue from our 2008 AMTRAK/VIA vacation on my web site. It can be found at:

railroadrich.com

Click on "Railroad Stuff" and then "TRIP REPORTS"

There are several pages in my report. ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!

RRRich, quite an adventure so far! I read up to your arrival in Denver, but had to give my eyes a rest. That green background and I don't get along! So far it sounds like quite a trip, and I'll bet you did the right thing getting your wife to LA early.

cubzo -- yeah, I don't know why that computer script shows up. I get it too sometime, after I go back and forth between pages on the site. Keep trying -- it may be a problem with your browser.

RR4me - -WHAT???!!! You don't like my choice of colors? Sorry about that -- I try to make each entry in the web site a different color. I used blue for the 2006 trip report, so thought I'd try something different. If I get concerns from other people, I can easily change the color.

Glad you are enjoying it so far!!

Great report, Rich! I've been told that Canada (Quebec & Ontario) is a good alternative, if you're not able to go to Europe, so your report has given me the bug to look into a Canadian trip for the future.

You mentioned the rough CSX tracks on the Silver Star route - I noticed the same thing on my Meteor trip the end of July, especially on the southbound portion. I likened it to "riding over boulders" and got rather concerned in one spot around the GA/FLA line that the train was about to tip over. CSX should be ashamed!

And what is with Amtrak and the incessently malfunctioning potties?? Although the public toilets in coach are abused (mostly by unsupervised kids), it was a real surprise to find out the sleeping cars have that problem.

Enjoyed your website very much.

This is interesting - I just went to your site on my home computer and got the computer script. The site looks fine on the computer I use at work. The work computer uses the Microsoft browser while my home computer uses Firefox.

I also enjoyed your excellent trip report, but like some others I didn't like the green background, as well the page was too wide for my screen and I had to constantly move it back and forth in order to read it.

As for the Viewliner bedrooms, I always ask for "B" as it faces forward. It would appear that Amtrak never reverses the car since B is always forward and A is always backward. As for the chairs when I last rode the Lake Shore from Chicago to Buffalo about nine months ago, it was stored under the bed, whereas in the Superliners the chairs are now bolted down in an unmoveable position. I always ask for "E" in the Superliners for it is usually facing forward, although the last time on the Chief out of L.A. I had "D" and it was facing forward so that car was obviously reversed.

It is interesting that on Amtrak I have on several occasions had non-functioning toilets, whereas on Via that almost never happens. I think Amtrak should have an on-board plumber constantly riding its trains.

Doesn't appear to be Firefox compatible.

Do you happen to use iWeb photos, or a webmac gallery? I know the newest Firefox version (3) does not work with these apple codes. And there is no simple fix at this time either [Frown]

Other Firefox users should notice that some of the photos on this Amtrak site no longer work.

However Firefox 3 does work with this page when it didn't with previous versions.

Can't see it with my Mac with Safari or Firefox - just code

My new "default" station (EKH) has no baggage service or QuikTrak machine, but the parking is free! And the NY Central RR Museum is just across the tracks (but not open at Amtrak train times. . ..)

This problen isn't unusual - Firefox won't get those 360 degree pictures of stations and train cars either.

Thanks for all the comments, everyone -- I'll change the background color for the report. Apparently my site is not compatible with Firefox, but I use Inernet Explorer both at home and at the office, and it appears to work on both of those computers. I can't speculate on Macs, however.......

Not anymore [Big Grin]

I updated to Firefox 3 and they now work perfectly. Check the last link in my post above.
