I just wanted to ask again my question that I think got lost below—Can anyone familiar with Columbia SC tell me if you think it will it be OK for me to arrive in Columbia at 4 in the morning northbound from FL? I plan to take a taxi to my hotel, and the cab companies seem reliable enough, but I was hoping anyone who knows the city could give his or her input. Thanks!

Sojourner - I don't think any 4am arrival is ever ok, but you should be safe enough. The station is fairly new and in an area that is being revived - a recent nice apartment complex is next door. But a cab is definitely in order.

Try to find a hotel on or within a block or two of Gervais St. Between the Capitol and the Gervais St. overpass of the tracks. I believe there is a Hampton Inn there and Marriott Courtyard. Other hotels are nearby. This is the trendy (for Columbia) area known as the Vista. Lots of good restaurants, antique shops - the usual stuff. Certainly the Blue Marlin restaurant I've mentioned (former Seaboard RR station) is at the top of the list. We go into Columbia fairly often and next trip I'll look at the downtown area with tourist eyes and report on some good spots to visit.

If you have some spare time and enjoy chidren's museums, this is one of the best - http://www.edventure.org/about-us.aspx

Thanks Palmland. I do plan on going to the Blue Marlin--will put children's museum on the list, if I have time. And any new info would be most helpful. (I do like good BBQ, but as I won't have a car or much time, it would have to be downtown I think.)

Sojourner - I spent some time in Columbia today and was able to pick up quite a bit of literature on Columbia, the Capitol, and museums. If you could send me a PM with your address, or perhaps an email through the moderator, I would be glad to mail a package to you.

Palmland, I do apologize, I only just saw your post here! And that is so very nice of you to gt the literature on Columbia. I am leaving tomorrow, alas, too late to get it; but I will pick up the info when there. I will only be there 1 day, on my way back up north from Florida. I am also stopping in Richmond and will be going to BOTH train stations there, coming in at Staple Mills, leaving from Main Street.

Looking forward to your trip report as always Sojourner.

Sojourner - sorry we didn't connect. Hope you wind up at the Hampton Inn - halfway (about half mile) between the Capitol and the EdVenture/State Museums and across the street from the Blue Marlin. The Art Museum is also located downtown and less than a mile from the hotel.

Hope you have a good trip. Let us know if you'd like to meet my wife and I for lunch.
