I know this is off topic, but I wondered if anyone has any good mystery/suspense writer recs for New Orleans. I am not interested in anything too horribly violent, so I couldn't read that Burke fellow (even though the book I tried was called Sunset Limited!), nor would Anne Rice appeal to me at all; and I tried that Julie Smith and didn't like her style and characterization (including some tiresome teenage girl fighting with their mother). Is there anyone else anyone recommends?

James Lee Burke does not write about New Orleans, but southwest Louisiana. I'm surprised you didn't like Julie Smith, but tastes differ. Tony Dunbar, Jean Redmann and Tony Fennelly have all written highly praised New Orleans whodunits, and while I have not read any of their books they have excellent reputations in the racket.
(Ought to mention, just in case you disapprove, that Redmann's cop heroine is a lesbian.)

Thanks, Henry. Maybe the Julie Smith book I tried was the wrong one; I don't think it featured that Scott detective, so maybe I should try one of those. Thanks for the other recs.

While not specifically New Orleans, have you read John Grisham's whodunits? He writes of things Southern as one who is one, not as one who is looking at a foreign culture.

Well, go back to the fountainhead and find yourself a copy of Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire". It's set in New Orleans, of course, and while the streetcar on Desire Street is long gone, you can still ride the one marked "Cemeteries" (Canal Street cars).

Sojourner I finally remembered one of my favorite NO authors...Laura Childs. She has written 5 scrap book mysteries all taking place in NO. She has also written the tea shop mysteries in Charleston (which I love) Her characters are so well written.Also if yu can access a library by computer go to Novelist and click on adult mysteries in NO. This is a fabulous site if you don't know about it.You can find books on almost any subject
