It seemed, to me, that the train increased speed just before the derailment. Is it normal for trains to pick up speed, after the locos cross the frog?

Huh? Just looked at it, if any increase of speed it was insignificant. Plus, you don't exactly get neck popping acceleration with a freight train even if you try.

The allowed speed over a turnout of this nature is usually 10 to 15 mph, and the train speed did not appear to be near that.

Notice: NO GRAFITTI!, even though these cars have obviously not seen fresh paint for a long time.
