Great report.....

Ever consider a career in writing Henry?

(teasing - your book on the California Zephyr has been on my shelf for a decade.)

Which brings me to a new dilemma - my sister gave me a Nook for Christmas which I haven't gotten around to taking out of the box yet.

I'm not intimidated by the internet technology involved...... but I am reluctant to make the switch. I enjoy the 'feel' of a good book in my hands. I enjoy the smell of the printed page. Most of all, I enjoy finishing an enjoyable book and finding a place for it on one of my bookcases.....kind of like a trophy.

There ARE nice things to be said about tree-books.

The night before the trip I recharged my Kindle. Shortly after the CONO departed Chicago Union Station, I hauled it out of my backpack.

Dead.

No amount of fussing would bring it alive.

Damn.

Fortunately I had brought along my iPod Touch, too, and read a novel on it during the trip.

When we got home I was about to e-mail Amazon.com for repair or replacement. But then I thought to read the manual.

Its troubleshooting section had a tip: hold the Kindle switch open for at least 15 seconds, then recharge it.

Bingo!

But a nice lightweight paperback tree-book would have been absolutely trouble-free.

E-book readers are here to stay, and probably will take the lion's share of the publishing industry before long. But there will always be room for the printed book.

Thanks, Henry, for the link. I'd only heard of the Camellia Grill out near Tulane. I'd still go there for the streetcar ride but it's nice to know there is one in a bit closer. And Destin, Fl? It sounds as if they are keeping up the quality.

Again, forgive my ignorance!! In my older years, I am not as computer-savvy as I used to be. What in the world is a "tree-book" or a "kindle?" I've heard of kindles, but don't really know what they are -- I assume it's some kind of electonic book you can get from the Internet?

tree-book = paperback or hardcover book. (Paper made from tree pulp).

kindle = an electronic book tablet (similar to an Ipad) sold by Amazon.com. You can download books from their site.(Also some newspapers).

Am waiting for next drop in price and I will be buying.

I believe "debark" is a variation of "disembark," but with French overtones (i.e. "debarque"). However, none of the dogs in question were poodles. . .
