I was on 30 (9) last night when this grade crossing accident occurred somewhere east of Elkhart, Ind.
An Amish horse pulling a buggy spooked when it heard the horn of a westbound freight train and dashed across the crossing and was struck by the freight's llocomotive. The horse bounced into the path of the oncoming Amtrak 30.
The buggy had no passengers or driver. Presumably the horse had escaped from its owner nearby.
When the accident occurred at about 8 p.m., the conductor said we had stopped because of "an incident outside the train."
An hour later it was "a mechanical problem."
An hour and a half later the sleeper attendant said "We hit a horse."
Didn't get the details until this morning from the lead service attendant.

Being onboard a train that hits something it shouldn't hit is never a good thing.
Speaking from experience.
