I noticed on the Train Web site that there was a link to an article about our station here in SBA. It turned out to be the same article that appeared today on EdHat.com, a local alternative "news" source.

You should be warned that this article, although it has some nice photos, is full of inaccurate information. Much of it was taken from Wikipedia entries which are certainly not noted for their factuality.

Read the comments, including my own. This is great proof that you should not believe something just because it is on the internet.

Frank in cool and clear SBA

I went to EdHat.com but could not find the article. Do you have a more specific link? I am curious about the inaccuracies.

I've been in and out of the Santa Barbara train station several times, but I've never noticed the fig tree. Guess I should pay more attention. The station is very nice, however.

Thanks, Vincent. It was restored by the City. They also did a nice job with the landscaping that is accurate for the time period. There was once a large park area that extended to the Potter/Ambassador Hotel that was built on the area that is now Burton Circle. The color chosen for the exterior walls was a big deal when it was put on. Apparently it is an accurate version of the standard Southern Pacific station color of the period.

One of the best things for locals is that the parking is very reasonable. The last time I used that lot it was $2.00 a day with an Amtrak validation.

The Fig Tree is located West of the station. Look for it and the semi-restored Southern Pacific Business car the next time you come through SBA.

Frank in sunny and soon to be warm SBA
