My 1992 CZ timetable says 2416 miles Chicago-Oakland. The 2011 timetable says 2438 Chicago-Emeryville.
I am sure there are good reasons for the change, but can anyone tell me what they are?

Earthquake? Space-time continuum? Seriously though, as Chris says, the timetables are always off. I remember one pair of separately printed timetables within the same booklet - I think it was the Sunset and Texas Eagle - that had different mileages for the combined section!
Accounting for, or not as the case may be, reversing moves at Denver and Chicago could make a difference of a few miles. Also, different routings east and westbound, for example due to grades, but I don't recall any such situations on the CZ route.
