Well, our deluxe bedroom on the Capitol Limited which departed Chicago turned into a bus from Pittsburgh which arrived almost 3-1/2 hours late. Apparently some gentleman in Sandusky felt he had lived long enough and stepped in front of a NS freight. We were behind that freight and were held up for about 2 hours. When we finally arrived in Pittsburgh we had missed our window to get through CSX tunnel construction down the line, so we were held for the buses...which didn't arrive until 10:30. Finally arrived Washington at 4 p.m. Suppose I should be thankful that this is my first involuntary bustitution in 20 or so Amtrak trips dating back to 1979.

Still, it was a good trip. My niece and nephew have traveled Amtrak before, and they handled the delay well. The hotel in Washington is nice, and I'm looking forward to a week of sightseeing. The kids are flying home (with their grandmother) on Monday, while I head back to Houston via the Crescent and Sunset Limited.

Sorry to hear about your bustitution.

Nothing about a bus rivals even two adults in a roomette.

Well that's a coincidence as the only time I've been bustituted was on the Capitol. A freight train derailed ahead of us and we ground to a halt during breakfast. Fortunately, we were somewhere near a university town where there were coach operators a-plenty (South Bend rings a bell) and it was no more than 30-40 minutes before we were being taken off (sleeper passengers first, of course!) to take us into Chicago.

I was warned about this possibility when I was booking my recent trips on the Capitol Limited and Cardinal. I was lucky, though!
