The girl dropped her cell phone by the tracks..and narrowly avoided disaster.

I think that is what the girl must have said, Henry.

My guess is that the girl misjudged the speed of the train. She probably thought that the train would creep in at 5-10 mph and that she would have plenty of time to retrieve the cell phone.

I often wonder why somebody was filming that sort of thing - was a near-miss planned (but perhaps not THAT close), did the videographer realize what might happen and thought to record the gruesomeness, or what?

That video was probably taken from the phone of someone alert enough to see what might happen.
