AMTRAK TO CONTINUE OPERATING IN THE EVENT OF A SHORT-TERM FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN
WASHINGTON - In light of the uncertainty in the federal budgeting process, Amtrak issued the following statement today:
"Amtrak will continue normal operation of its national intercity and high-speed passenger rail network in the event of a short-term federal government shutdown. Passengers planning to travel on Amtrak trains in the Northeast Corridor and across the country in the coming days and weeks can be assured that Amtrak will remain open for business."

And I suppose there'll be no effect on air travel, unlike that time a while back when the controllers were furloughed briefly, causing the legislators to meltdown because their travel was delayed.
With that in mind, someone should lock the 538 + 100 + 1 in a confined area with no food, water, or facilities until this is resolved. Wouldn't last more than a few hours, I don't guess.

Actually, taking Reid into a closet and explaining the situation to him would probably work better than anything else. Currently, he thinks he is a tin god.

Neither Reid nor Boehner are big enough for the moment. As far as "tin gods" are concerned, there are plenty to go around on both sides of this mess.

The NYT is owned by the DNC, so their editorial is not surprising.
The Journal employs a few people that possess some common sense, logic, and analytical abilities.
The House has passed a number of bills that would keep various parts of the government fully funded. Reid will not bring them up for a vote.

You have to be suspicious when the federal government refuses to accept full funding from the state of Arizona to keep the Grand Canyon open, so its closure will not hurt the state's tourism business.
Tell me that that's not manipulation on the part of the administration to make the shutdown seem worse than it has to be.

Manipulation of a crisis works both ways, Don. Here's what the Prescott, AZ Daily Courier has to say about it:
"We all want the Grand Canyon open. It just may be more politically beneficial to use a ploy to suddenly fund it with state money in order to wage a public battle with the federal government.
Our state politicians can throw hyperbolic blame at the feds for state funding they suddenly deem appropriate, but won't fund other programs critical to state interests or state voters when there's no federal government to politically scapegoat.
Can our state elected officials worry about their own dysfunction before taking on Washington? Please??"
Keep in mind, too, that karma works its strange magic when you least expect it. Remember that image of Gov. Jan Brewer waving her finger in Obama's face on the tarmac a couple of years ago?

BOTH PARTIES OWN A FULL SHARE THIS. Maybe not for this episode, but each party has over the past two decades contriubted, one slight at a time, to a political environment that cannot get things done even if the Lord God Himself returned in all power and glory tomorrow morning at 9.
Vote them all out.

That's a really interesting web page, Vincent. I've been clicking-through on all sorts of things there. It's amazing that even though many of these things are decades and decades old, the same names keep popping up over and over. Amazing how many elected government "servants" made a career out of it---and magically became multi-millionaires on a modest salary. Gee, I wonder how that happened???
