Now that my wife Jan and I are back together (after a 3-year separation), we are tentatively planning an AMTRAK trip next summer to southern California to visit Jan's son and his family. We would take the Blue Water LNS-CHI, then the Texas Eagle to L.A. (via SAS). After spending a few days with the family out there, we will go to Sacramento (via San Joaquin), stay at the Vagabond Inn, and spend a day in SAC touring, among other things, the California Railroad Museum. We would then return to Michigan on the Zephyr and Blue Water.

No date determined yet -- stay tuned........

I'm sure you will enjoy the Calif. State Railroad Museum, Rich, especially if you've never before seen it. Be sure to catch the video presentation before walking into the museum. Also the model railroad layout.

Old Town Sacramento is also fun and interesting. If you have lots of time, Napa is only about an hour drive from Sacramento, and the Napa Valley Wine Train.

My wife and I will be staying at the Vagabond 10/20-23/15.
I know this is a long shot but if you and yours happened to be there on one of those dates it wold be fun to meet for a drink or coffee.

If you have the time, I recommend going to see Yosemite, if you've never been, and esp if you go in spring, when the waterfalls should be running. It's easily reachable by bus-train combo from Sacramento. We stayed in Mariposa and went into Yosemite next day and took a bus tour of the valley floor, which took us to many of the main sites. It's spectacular.

Hi all -- I've been away from my computer for a few days.

Yukon -- I visited the Cal. RR Museum many many years ago when I was married to my first wife, and am looking forward to going there again. On my 2012 AMTRAK trip, I spent the evening at Old Town and had dinner there.

Iron Mtn -- we'll likely be going in June either right before or right after our anniversary. July is out, since I will be busy with various activities associated with the Au Sable River Canoe Marathon most of the month.

Sojourner -- yes, Yosemite is beautiful!! I've been there before, but I don't believe we'll be able to include that in this trip. Thanks for the suggestion, though!!
