What kind of transportation experience, if any, will she bring to the table, or is she simply the minority-female designate?

Obviously, of concern around here is what effect, favorable or adverse, will she have upon Amtrak interests?

According to the WSJ:

"Ms. Chao, 63 years old, was the first American woman of Asian descent to be appointed to the cabinet when she was named secretary of labor by President George W. Bush in 2001. She served all eight years that Mr. Bush was in office, and was his only cabinet member to do so.

She also served as deputy secretary of transportation in the administration of President George H.W. Bush.

A Harvard Business School graduate, Ms. Chao was a banker at Citigroup and president and chief executive officer of the United Way of America before she joined the Bush administration.

In 2009, she returned to the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank in Washington, as a distinguished fellow and joined several corporate and nonprofit boards, including Wells Fargo, Dole Food Co. and the National World War II Museum."

It's not Chao that I'm worried about. Transportation - related experience or not, (and she does have some, as Palmland pointed out), she has a solid record of running agencies, both government and private. She ran the United Way Campaign, cleaning up the mess left by her predecessor, William Aramony.
This link gives us some reason to be hopeful:
http://www.slate.com/blogs/moneybox/2016/11/29/reports_trump_will_pick_elaine_chao_who_is_qualified_for_transportation.html

More important for our site is who the next Amtrak Chairman will be. John Mica is looking for a job. And what will be Trump's vision for Amtrak? For that matter, what is Congress's vision for Amtrak? With the Repiglickers in total control of Washington and the Democrats nearly powerless, will they use their "mandate" to totally eviscerate it? Or will we go back to plastic forks and knives again? or will LD routes be farmed out to contractors, or cut off entirely? Will they cancel the purchase of the remaining low - level cars?
Chao is an able administrator, but she will answer to higher authorities and will do as ordered.

In the 8 years that Chao spent in charge of the Labor Department, I don't remember a single story or action that was newsworthy. Hopefully her time in charge of Transpo will be equally uneventful.

Mr. Nicholson, I'd really like to caution that Slate is highly opinionated "Alt-Left" media, and to me hardly represents the objectivity I expect from my media sources.

Have the "Salt Shaker" handy as you read.

Finally as a CPA that had a child welfare agency client depending on United Way for about one third of its funding exclusive of Purchase of Service Contracts, the Aramony mess hurt the not-for-profit community "big time". Large corporations were compelled to soft pedal the annual employee shakedown, and allocations to member agencies reduced accordingly. It was a real Black Eye for the "voluntary" fund raising efforts of the UW.

Actually, Mr. Norman, the fact that this leftist site has no problem is encouraging.
On the other hand, the article never mentioned Amtrak.

Mr. Nicholson, I respect that you have never represented this Slate opinion piece to be news. For myself, I did read Slate occasionally when it was owned by Microsoft and the Op-Ed views were "a bit more" balanced. But then, some around here hold that my principal newssource The New York Times, is equally biased.

Jerome: Not all of us on here are way out on the left limb politically, so at least be polite to those that might think the Republican views make more sense than the Dimocrats or Shillery, to give you some analysis of the other views make of yours. Usually I at least use the correct names.

Having long since realized that political agencies can spend whatever money they can get their hands on I have a certain amount of hope that Trumps business background can help shake some of the useless spending out of the various government agencies. That being despite considering the guys one of the sleaziest people to run for the office, but slightly less than the alternative. I think that viewpoint is why neither of these candidates achieved a MAJORITY, but only a plurality but in which Clinton achieved a majority in only a few states, and in California on a few parts thereof.

And, yes Mr. Norman, I know you consider the NYT a reliable source, an opinion I do respect, but not necessarily understand. Perhaps it is a reliable source on factual matters, but a source I regard as highly biased on anything involving opinion or where picking a choosing of stories to run is involved.

Back to Chao, I would expect her to, if operating as a businesswoman should, be able to find enough waste and financial manipulation in DOT to far exceed the total Amtrak budget.
