Interesting proposal:

I guess the main concern would be ridership, especially during the non peak season.

I would like to see a hookup with Kamloops, as well. However, probably not realistic with the Canadian only 3X/week.

That's very interesting.
The private Rocky Mountaineer still stops in some of these stops, right?

Yes, the Rocky Mountaineer is the only train stopping at Lake Louise, Banff, and Calgary.

I'm thinking of a trip to Lake Louise, on the Mountaineer, in the summer of 2017. The Mountaineer, for a while, didn't stop at Lake Louise, but now it does. I think they also have a shuttle bus or van between Lake Louise and Banff.

The Rocky Mountaineer's last "stop" is now Banff. They don't carry passengers between Banff and Calgary any more.

I think as long as VIA ends its route at Banff or Lake Louise, Rocky may be ok with this. Frankly it would bring them passengers in from the East.

Isn't the Rocky Mountaineer seasonal, i.e., no train in winter?

Sojourner: The Rocky Mountaineer runs from mid April through mid October. I don't think there is a winter train. It would be nice if they had one from Vancouver to Whistler for the skiers. However I don't see a "Whistler Mountaineer" in their schedule, anymore. Whistler is still part of a larger loop tour.

Thanks, jp1822, for the information on the fact Calgary is no longer a RM stop. It's too bad there isn't a VIA Edmonton to Calgary (and Banff) train.
