Everything old is new again. BTW, 6 hours, 30 minutes from 4th and Townsend to Santa Monica Pier. I am assuming this is taking the route of the Owl and the West Coast, vice the Lark and the Coaster (Central Valley). Google Maps reports 7:30 on US 101, 6:30 on I-5.

The City of Saint Louis (UP, 1967) is still my standard for passenger operations

The service will be significantly faster using mostly the I-5 than SP's was. The best SP time coast or valley I believe was 9 and 1/2 hours, before SP added stops due to discontinued trains.

This is a brilliant idea if you don't evaluate by--I am generalizing here--the desires of older people.

The selection of the Santa Monica stop in itself is brilliant.

This stop sits several blocks from the Green Line, which starts service I believe in May. The Green Line already serves USC.

UCLA's an easy direct transit ride away.

One of the most popular hostels in the country is couple of blocks away, with more in Venice Beach.

Moreover, the Santa Monica area has probably the best bus transit in So Cal. People in the area are used to buses.
