From Uncle Buck on the Amtrak forum (1-7-03):
quote:
"Chief, I'm hoping to take the California Zephyr this spring (March 21-28/29) with my family (two parents and 18-y-o brother). What room would you suggest, Standard or Deluxe? I was leaning toward 2 Standards west and 2 Deluxe on the way back(CHI-EMY) you know, to change things up a bit. . . .

to which The Chief replies:

Uncle Buck, what do you think about 1 Standard, 1 Deluxe, each way? Sort of mix it up. I'm thinking if someone wanted to nap, they could crash in the Standard. That would leave the Deluxe for the rest of the fam.
This is based on your popping for 1 of each, as you mentioned.

I know I like a nap sometime -- it seems I eat, rest, then time to eat again on the train! Hope this helps.

I think that that would be an excellant idea. After I had posted that I thought about that option.
My mother and maybe brother might not go on the train the way back. In that case if it were just my dad and I we would get a deluxe only.
