On Aug 31 the darling Wife and I boarded the Southwest Chief in Fullerton after having another great meal at Taps in Brea. The temp that evening was about 110 and the humidity was very high. The Chief was on time and the air conditioning in our room was working great. Our room attendants and cafe car crew were courteous, hard working and attentive to our needs. Joe was our car attendant on our way out and Jay on our trip back. We had the bedroom for both directions on the Chief, it was roomy and comfortable. The food for the most part was sustaining but with a few nice surprises, they had a country fried steak that was pretty good and the Bob Evans scramble made me nostalgic for the LRP rations I had in 'nam. The scenery was great in both directions. Passing through deserts mountains and many dirt water 'burgs including Mr Normans Clarendon Hills. The Chief was either on time or early at most destinations though about two hours prior to arriving in Chicago they announced an early arrival to Chicago, well a faulty signal and waiting for a freight cancelled that out. While in Chicago we caught a few Cubs games. visited Navy pier, took the river tour, ascended Sears tower and took the get on get off double decker bus tour. I took about 250 photos, some good most not so. Thanks for the trip report. Looks like you had a nice time. A few quick comments:
-You're the first person who has ever had compliments for the not-so-special-special of Country Fried Steak. YUCK! But if you had a good experience with it, that's good.
-It looks like on your trip to Chicago, you had an old ratty Superliner I non-refurb sleeper. I can't believe Amtrak is still running this junk. Mechanically I guess they're okay (and their restrooms don't break down like the Superliner II's tend to). In your photo of the "hole" on the wall of the vanity area, that's where a towel rack used to hang. Looks really junky in that photo. Shame on Amtrak for putting people in cars like this when they pay such high prices to be there!!!!!
-I like your power strip! I've never seen one like that before. Where did you get it? Very handy for train trips, that's for sure.
-On your trip coming back, it's hard to tell from the photo but I think you were in a Superliner I refurb sleeper. Those are so much nicer, and the bathrooms are a good size also.

Thanks for the comments Smitty, for some reason when I uploaded my pic to photobucket they reversed the order so the room with the hole in the wall was on our way home to SoCal. The power stip was purchased at a Best Buy near here, there was a little extrusion tit in the back I had to break off so it would fit in the socket but the n it worked great for two ipods camera and laptop.

Very nice. I really liked the pictures of Chicago from the top of the skyscraper, not a view we had on our recent visit. Looks like you had a very clear day too, good for photos. I need to get to the Museum of Science and Industry next time, looked very interesting.
