Inspired by the award winning book by Chris Van Allsburg come experience the magic of The Polar Express™. Read along with the story as the train makes a roundtrip journey to the North Pole. Meet Santa and enjoy caroling, hot chocolate and a treat. And, for those who believe, a special gift for each child. Everyone is encouraged to wear their pajamas!
Our 3:45pm runs are a great opportunity for visitors to see steam engine 300 leave from the railroad shop at about 2:30pm switching its way down to the Polar Express™. This is a great photo opportunity. Photographers not riding the train have the opportunity to take pictures of it as the train passes over crossings between the Palestine station and Jarvis Crossing during the train’s trip.
Engine 300 is a Baldwin steam locomotive built for the U.S. Army in 1917 and known as a “General Pershing” type. This 2-8-0 was stationed at Fort Polk Louisiana and then sold to the Tremont and Gulf Short Line Railroad who then sold it to Southern Pine Lumber Company. She came to the Texas State Railroad in 1976 from Southern Pine and underwent restoration and put back into service in 1996.
