I would choose the Capital. I live in that area, I have ridden that train for many years, I like the crew, the lounge in DC, the scenery along the way,and I prefer a superliner to a viewliner. I think a lot depends where you live and how easy it is for you to get to whichever station. I personally do not like the lower level or rooms 2,9 and 10 on the upper on the superliner But again this is personal choice.

my post got away from me before I could add that if you can afford it go for a bedroom. There is more room and you have your private bathroom.

Don't know about the track contions for the Capitol, but I can tell you that ride on the LSL is VERY rough between Syracuse and Chicago.

I, too, prefer the superliner to the viewliner.

It depends where your priorities are, if scenery,
Capital is good, but IMO Cardinal is better.

If equipment and service is important, as Train Lady said, go with the Capital.

LSL would be last resort unless looking for heritage diner experience.

First of all, the LSL does not operate Chicago to Washington DC -- do you mean the LSL or do you mean the Cardinal? To take the LSL, you would need to take a Regional train from DC to New York to catch the Lake Shore.

From DC to Chicago, the Cardinal has better scenery, but both trains are pretty nice. As others have said, the Capitol Ltd is all Superliner, and the Lake Shore Ltd and Cardinal are Viewliner/Heritage equipment.

If you mena the Cardinal remember it has no diner and no checked baggage

Thank You all for your input.

I've ridden the Cardinal and you are correct the scenery is fabulous. We wanted to try a different route this time.

I was considering the Capitol because I had read somewhere that the tracks were rough on LSL, however I have heard that from DC to Chi the scenery isn't that great in daylight hours on this route.

Yes we would have to take Regional from NY to DC.

Anyone know what the Regional trip would be like?

Thanks, I appreciate all responses.

In a word boring. But that may be because we have taken that trip so many times that it is old hat. I find there is really nothing much to see from NYC to DC. I find the scenery on the Capital very nice, if that is a good word to describe scenery.I love coming into Harper's Ferry and like seeing all the other smaller towns along the way.I will admit that the scenery going east on the Cardinal is great but
with all the service changes I prefer the Capital. The worst part for me is no checked bagggage. It's a long walk from the train to the lounge in Chicago and the red caps aren't always available.Geting it on the train, off the train, dragging it to be checked in Chicago is a real pain and in a roomette it gets pretty crowded. To answer your question about the regional further you may want to take it just because you haven't done so before and you will most likely find things of interest to you that are old hat to me.
