As a small boy in 1952 I remember taking the Imperial from Phoenix to Los Angeles. Probably by then it did not go through Mexico via Clexico but probably took the Golden State route. I remember it was hauled by steam and we stopped at Buckeye Ariz. for water. Thanks for bringing back this memory.

Actually, in 1952 the Imperial was still running the Imperial Valley route through Calexico with a dip into Mexico itself for about 50 miles. The San Diego connection via the SD&AE was no more, but otherwise it was still on essentially the same itinerary as I show for 1950 (to Los Angeles).

Maybe that's why it seemed that this train took so much longer, Phoenix to L.A., than the Golden State since it took that dip into Mexico.

Absolutely great job. Eric. I can't think how many times I've tried to get timetables and maps of old, fallen-flag train routes. You site is much appreciated. I look forward to seeing the western and northwestern trains, especially, Makes me long for the good-old days.
