I have seen the flat iron steak, but I don't think it is as good as the NY strip steak they used to have.

I'll be having dinner on the Empire Builder in about a week. I'll do a food report when we return from train-watching at the Izaak Walton Inn!!

Apparently according to the Trainorders post, all the LD routes are to have full meal service reinstated. Not sure about the staff though. And hopefully this means no more cheap plastic plates and cups. I for one would love to see real china and actual glass back on the Sunset. On our last trip the people in the table next to us tried to cut their burger in half and ended up slicing right through the plate!

While not very tender, Flat Iron steak is quite tasty and contains less fat than a Sirloin and definitely less fat than a Rib Eye.
It goes well with a marinade such as a mild Teriyaki.
I get flatiron steaks often and they are very tender. According to my butcher if they are cut too thick they are tough.

The Superliner diners have the best kitchens on the rails and they should be utilized. I remember reading a very old Passenger Train Journal that mentioned Amtrak was hesitant to include the dining cars with the initial Superliner order with Pullman.

Full meal does not mean they will necessarily go back to the better full meals (with silverware and better food) that only the Empire Builder still serves (and maybe Coast Starlight). Full meal just means they are getting rid of the dinner lite, which was a such a bust.

Flat Iron Steak was available on the EB. Coast Starlight got a new menu on the 12th and includes the steak. great omletts and hasbrowns for breakfast. Had roast pork also and it was excellent. Some said the new menu was system wide and some said it was only the coast starlight.

My brother had what he said was a "pretty decent" cheese omlette with breakfast potatoes for brekafast, a "not very good" veggie burger for lunch, and "ok" POLENTA for dinner on #20 yeaerday out of NOLA. He's a pretty picky eater but he said overall he was pleased. Of course, he doesn't ride the train very much so he didn't have the honor of experiencing the Country Fried Steak! Anyway, the new menu sounds good to me!

I had such recently at a TGIFriday's.
That well known establishment for "boil in the bag" and high prices for what is largely pre-assembled food. I'd suggest elsewhere for a "proper" steak of any description (namely Argentina but realise that may not be practical).
What's a "mild" Teryaki? It only consists of soy sauce, sugar, and mirin (like a sweet rice wine).
Good to hear decent food service is making a comeback on Amtrak.
