For the end of March from the Bay Area to Lamy New Mexico I have booked on a Sunday on the outbound and returning on a Monday from Lamy in the begining of April? Will the train be crowded due to spring break or less crowded as spring break is sometimes later/earlier? I think there won't be many families going at this time because school is usually out in mid April.

Are the loads low and will the lower level be less crowded as a result of this?

I have no idea when Spring Break is, but I know that the Coast Starlight gets sold-out (routinely) during that time period. I would imagine that other Western long-distance trains have a similar pattern?

When you ask about the lower level being less crowded, can you please clarify that? Are you talking sleeper or coach? I will assume coach, and if so, you should reserve a lower-level coach seat with Amtrak (it is an option when booking online---just click on the button to upgrade as if you were upgrading to a sleeper, but you will see the "lower level coach seat" option).

I think I answered your questions, but I'm not sure?

What used to be a couple of weeks period, usually before or after Easter has now become most of March and April. Different schools have widely different schedules now so you can expect some Spring Break traffic during those months.

I haven't ridden the Starlight lately but I know that the Surfliners are VERY busy on weekends. That's the one instance where I tell people that booking in Business Class is definitely worth the extra money.
