Hello: We are planning on traveling the TEXAS EAGLE, Chicago-Palm Springs this summer in sleepers. Any one have opinions of this route? Good/Bad? How about the dining car service?
Also: Any suggestions on routes to take for California Zephyr and connection from Emeryville to Palm Springs? We would take the Texas Eagle from Palm Springs to Chicago.
Any suggestions would be great!
Thanks,
Rail Fan

Little confused here by what you want. You get into Emeryville on the CZ late evening, so it sounds like you would be spending the night in the bay area. Is that right? After that, you have to possibilities to LA, going down the valley on the train/bus via Bakersfield, or taking the Starlight down the coast. Between LA and Palm Springs, there is only the Sunset/Texas Eagle three days a week. Otherwise, there may be a bus possibility.

There apparently is a bus that runs from Bakersfield to Palm Springs, but I can't find it on the Amtrak website. It's probably for the better though. I would take a train/bus to LA and make the connection there. Palm Springs station is pretty desolate.
