Did anyone else notice this article from the main TrainWeb page: http://www.railwaygazette.com/news_view/article/2009/04/9489/amtrak_plans_fleet_refurbishment.html and the section that says that 15 F-40 locos will be returned to Amtrak service. That would be really nice to see happen. I thought the last F40's had left the company? Is this accurate?

I did not see the article, but it is the Amtrak P-40 diesels that are being returned to service, not the F40's.

Indeed. If it were the F 40s, I would start looking at the date. I mean, April Fools Day was yesterday.

Amtrak purchased a large number of P40s as part of the mail and express initiative. With the demise of M&E, Amtrak found itself with a surplus of locos, so with new P42s available a number of P40s simply were mothballed. They needed mid-life rebuilds and Amtrak didn't have the money.

Now the stimulus package is providing some money, so Amtrak will rebuild at least 15 P40s.

Considering many of the F-40s I know about have been de-engined and made cab control/baggage cars, I tend to believe those who say it's the P-40 fleet being brought back.

Yes, it is the P-40's. Here is a list of everything that Amtrak is planning to do with the stimulus money raining from the heavens:

http://www.amtrak.com/pdf/ARRA/Amtrak-ARRA_Project-Summary-FY-09.pdf

(Careful, the file is 1.4 MB)

The P-40's are mentioned and listed on page 69 of the PDF.
