My wife, resigned to my enjoyment of trains, has offered to go with me on a birthday weekend to Truckee, from MArtinez, in late June. Will likely take the CZ as opposed to the Capitol Corridors, just because. My question - does anyone have a recommendation for a hotel or B&B within walking distance from the Truckee station? I've read through Trip Advisor, but would appreciate any other input. Thanks.

The Truckee Hotel is an easy stroll from the station. More info at http://www.truckeehotel.com/

It's located in the center of the Truckee. Several restaurants and obligatory touristy shops are nearby.

For breakfast, try the Wagon Train Coffee Shop. That's where the locals mix and dine with the Bay Area Masters of the Universe. For a beer or foo-foo adult beverage (again, you got locals mixing with Masters), try the American Bar and Grill. Both places are only a block or so from the hotel.

I'm not sure about your physical fitness, but walking from the train station to Donner State Park (& museum) is less than an hour. I've done it a few times, and I'm recognized as a poster child for bad living.

Back to the hotel. The TripAdvisor reviews are pretty accurate. The hotel can be noisy. Afterall, it's near the tracks, the main drag, and the epicenter of the Truckee aging-yuppy party scene (jeez, when will those people learn alcohol and botox don't mix).

But it's a nicely restored funky hotel. Just my type of place.

Thanks. That was one I'd looked at, and it looks like if I get a non-first floor room, the street noise/late arrivals won't be as big a problem. We both enjoy hikes, so going to the park sounds like a good idea. I remember there used to be a combination hardware/fly tackle/ice cream store right downtown that if there will be a good start and stop point for the walk.

I like old hotels, but am really partial to the grand old ones like the Brown Palace in Denver and the Sheraton Grand in SF. But I won't expect quite as much from this one [Smile]

I have stayed at the River Street Inn bed and breakfast and it was GREAT! I Highly recommend it!

Thank you too. How was the (non-train) noise?

I didn't hear anything in my room on my visit. But yeah, I did read some of those reviews on Trip Advisor. It seems to me that the folks who wrote those reviews A1: Should have stayed home on New Years Eve and B2: Would have been even more worse miserable at the Truckee Hotel, having to share the bathroom at the end of the hall and all.

This trip sounds like a great deal of fun. I'll add it to my list for 'someday'.

(note - I've ridden the CZ 'over the hill' 4 or 5 times......it's the stopping over for a night in Truckee that sounds great.)

Mr. Hoop, again we should be mindful of the source - Trip Advisor.

You can review my linked contrary view of a Hotel in Boca Raton which both my Sister, who is able to be and is far more discerning than am I in this life, and myself found to be perfectly acceptable.
