I guess it's been two years since I last did this, but at that time I was able to spend one day making big loop around the south SF Bay area and part of the Central Valley. I got on at Modesto, rode to Stockton, bussed to the Stockton ACE station, rode ACE to San Jose, then a Capitol Corridor train from SJC to Sacramento, then a San Joaquin back to Modesto. I just tried to schedule a repeat for this year (1/18/10), and lo and behold, ACE terminated the later train from Stockton! So now this loop (via train) is not possible in a day!
Any suggestions for my "empty" day? Maybe that'll be the train meetup dinner day, and I could finally get to Fullerton, although I'd ahve to take Tuesday off to get home, and pay for a hotel on Monday.

Yup....you just missed the mid-afternoon ACE cutoff by a few weeks!
Have you been to the State RR Museum in SAC?
The group of people at the Meetup in Fullerton is pretty good. I need to get down there again! I keep saying I'm going to, but just haven't gotten around to it yet. I was actually planning on attending the one in August, but then I ended up helping a friend move to Saskatoon (what a trip that was!).
