I'm not talking about the proposed major initiatives such as the high-speed routes but local things eg there was talk of a third daily Surfliner to/from either SLO or running right through to SJC or SFO and becoming a "coast daylight" and there was talk of some proposed feasibility survey on bringing back the Pioneer...
(and I'm not even going to mention Las Vegas!!)

It seems to me, Mr. Williams, that it would make more sense to expand the Surfliners to San Francisco to, in fact, create a new "Coast Daylight". I can't see how Calif. thinks it can build a HSR at 30 to 60 billion, or more. We now are 25-30 billion in the red.
However, California's unfunded obligations (such as retirement for state workers, etc) is more like 500 billion of unfunded liabilities. Does Calif. think it will get a bailout from the Feds?

Pretty much any service expansion that does not have backing from a state or regional agency is dead in the water these days......
Although North Carolina is scheduled to launch a new mid-day frequency each direction between Raleigh and Charlotte on June 5.

It should be obvious that any of the proposals for restoring LD trains have been "studied" - and that's that.
I wholly concur with Mr. Presley's thought that if there are to be new routes, there will be Local level funding supporting such. This is simply a continuation by the Obama administration of the Bush administration policy regarding routes.

If they ever tallied up all the money spent on "studies" usually done by outside consultants. I thought all "the experts" work in government? Like Pres. Bush, Pres. Obama mentioned he wants "To Land on Mars." Face it any improvements to rail service needs to be done at the local and state levels.
