Hi Gil...on our trip we will drive from the Illinois Ry Museum in Union around Lake Michigan toward Grand Rapids, etc. This will be on a weekday by about 1:30pm. Do you suggest taking the expressway right through the city or swinging wide around Chicago and does traffic usually build to crazy levels after about 3pm? All prior trips there have been civilized by train. Thanks.

I-90E (Kennedy/Dan Ryan/Skyway/Indiana Toll Road) is ill-advised any time of any day (@230A no traffic but I'll bet 50% of those on the Ryan at that time are drunk or high). How often using my "poor man's way to O'Hare" does my CTA train speed past the 'bumper to bumper' on the Kennedy?

I-290 Eisenhower Expressway is presently under construction. Four lanes have been reduced to two and speed is posted at 45mph. Do everyone, including your family, a favor and stay off it.

While circuituous, and the tolls are steep (especially since they're double if you haven't got an I-Pass transponder; your Sun Pass is no good up here), I would consider an I-90E (Jane Addams), I-355S (Veteran's) to I-80E (Borman in IN), construction on that route is presently "minimal'.

Thanks. I've noted this and knew that you'd be the man to ask.
