Here is a link to a nice article about New Haven's Union Station, Amtrak stops there. The plans for the station included a park walk way from the Station to downtown New Haven, the plan was devised by Cass Gilbert and Edward Olmsted.
Yes, very interesting. I enjoyed our visit to New Haven (by car) last year, when we saw 2 fantastic special exhibits at the Yale British art museum and ate clam pizza in Little Italy. But it looked like the area by the train station was a bit seedy (did not go right by, though). I have watched them change engines in New Haven a few times but never detrained there.

Sojourner: Pepe's or Sally's Pizza? The area around Union Station is not I would say seedy but the city managed to wall it off during their Urban Redevelopment in the 50's and 60's when train travel was not high on the agenda. Their are housing projects across the street from the station but nicely the New Haven Police Department Headquarters is on the next block. The famous Rt 34 connector cuts the area off from downtown. I hope on one of your trips you can take a look inside the station It recently celebrated its 100th birthday and was restored in the 1980's. There is talk about developing the area but with budget concerns and continued access to downtown it seems they missed the chance in 1910

I was very impressed with Little Italy - had a great restaurant but can't remember the name. Because we were a little dubious about the area, we took a cab to dinner, but had no qualms about walking back, although not sure I'd recommend if it was dark.
Glad to hear, Tanner, that the city is considering improving access to that very nice station.
