If I make my Montana trip this spring, I am hoping to come back east on the Coast Starlight & California Zephyr. This most likely means a layover in Sacramento; but I've been there many times, seen the train museum, capitol, Old Town, even taken a boat ride, all between trains (usually the other direction) . . . so now I'm thinking maybe I should try to change trains in Davis instead. It would mean a bit less of a layover but could mean seeing someplace new. But I know nothing of Davis but remembering hearing (here no doubt) that the train station is nice. But is it centrally located so I can go for a nice walk and see something of the city? Does anyone have any recommendations? I also have to make sure I can check luggage, as I know I can in Sacramento; I don't want to be dragging it around with me. Thanks for your advice!

Do you enjoy exploring college campuses to the same extent you do state capitols?

I have to ask; to what extent nowadays can you "just walk in" to a university building?

At my college reunion at DePauw last June, all the campus academic buildings were open and anyone could "just walk in" to any of them. Of course, Greencastle, Indiana, isn't exactly Chicago or New York City............

The dorms, however, did have "swipe card" access only.

Davis has cleaned up a lot of the downtown. The Amtrak station is one of my favorites. There are a number of shops and restaurants near the train station. It doesn't have attractions like the Railroad Museum and Oldtown that you find in Sacramento. There isn't enought to do for a whole morning or afternoon, but it is fine for just walking around to kill time while waiting for your train.
