Yesterday I got a phone survey call on behalf of Amtrak getting opinions on adding Wi-Fi, movies, TV channels and games to trains. Also they asked would I be willing to pay extra for it.

On s scale of 1 (don't care) to 10 (YES!!!) I gave a solid 10 to Wi-Fi, even at extra cost. TV I gave a 5 for maybe news and weather. Movies and games was a 2 for me, and I added the comment that I would rather be looking out the window.

They also asked if I had any other ideas for entertainment. So I struck a blow for foamers everywhere by asking for a camera looking ahead from the engine fed to a monitor or the Wi-Fi. They seemed to take it seriously and wrote it down.

Maybe I could have got away with asking for bagpipes, ponies and drum therapy? Sorry, I didn't think of it.

Since they called on my cell, they probably picked me from recent ticket purchasers.

I would have welcomed a strong wi-fi signal on my Surfliner trip yesterday. As for the entertainment, many people seem to bring their own along in the form of uploads to a computer, phone or tablet. I like the idea of the "Lococam"!

Maybe we Railforum/Amtrak members could cobble together a list of stations where free wi-fi is to be had. Here's where I've found it:

* Washington Union Station
* Boston South Station
* Chicago Union Station
* Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal
* Albuquerque (not the Amtrak/Greyhound station, but the transportation terminal just east, and you need to be on the platform, not in a Superliner)
* Alpine, Texas (two unsecured nodes belonging to civilians that may now be secured)
