Even though much of your Long Distance operations are presently disrupted through no fault of yours or your Politico "overseers", make the best of the day. Lest we forget, you have clearly outlived your life expectancy anyone within the industry (including management lesserlings like myself) gave you by now more than thirty years.

For what it be worth, the weather here in the "Land of the Burlingtons" is quite nice and seasonal today. In fact, I would dare say it is a 'dead on ringer' for that on A-Day forty years ago.

Omens, anyone?

Chris, that is truly great stuff. I wish you another million miles on Amtrak over the next 40 years; don't ever stop taking pix!

Yes! Happy 40th.Amtrak. Thank you for keeping passenger rail travel going with what resources you have,... and what appears to be, we hope, a renaissance for rail travel.

Here is an interesting article and narrative by a passenger who celebrated Amtrak's 40th by taking her first train ride:

Yukon -

Thanks for sharing.
While train travel has it's imperfections (and keep in mind this trip was in coach), it still beats planes or cars.

Nice article...... and the video piece was fairly well done.

Wish we had gotten a picture of train time at the temporary Denver station.

While most of this Joe Sharkey column appearing in Tuesday's Times is devoted to 'bombarding the enemy', there are some "positive" comments within such, and this appears to be the most appropriate active topic at which to share:

Here is an article (S. Schlichter, "Travel Tips")
that gives (in the author's opinion) 10 reasons why Amtrak is preferable to air flights.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25834942/ns/travel-travel_tips/

I will conditionally disagree with her point #1. Yes, coach travel is competitive, but a sleeper does add significantly to the cost when compared to corresponding air travel.

I heartily agree with her point #10.
