I thought I heard on ESPN radio today that the Miami Marlins baseball team was going to travel from Washington, DC to NY to play the Mets via a 3-car Amtrak charter. I know they got rained out in DC today, so I don't know if that changes anything. Can anyone on here confirm or deny? Not sure of departure/arrival times; perhaps they're already in NY.

Replying to my own post, but I found this on-line:

First two paragraphs are for Amtrak fans; rest for baseball fans only.

The Seattle Mariners radio broadcasters were talking about the team's train trip from New York to Baltimore on Sunday. The trip to Baltimore took about 2.5 hours, which isn't remarkable. But when the M's arrived in Baltimore, the Yankee's team plane was still sitting on the tarmac in New York waiting for air traffic delays to clear for their flight to Detroit.

Being located in the Pacific Northwest requires that the M's spend a lot of time in the air and here's the running total for this season (from By Larry LaRue, The News Tribune):

quote:
Frequent flyers: The Mariners took a train from New York to Baltimore after Sunday's games, giving them 420 miles via rail this season. By air? Counting their trip to Japan, the Mariners by the end of this trip will have flown in excess of 46,000 miles in 2012. Most teams fly fewer than 40,000 all year.
The closest MLB city to Seattle is Oakland which would require a 23 hour trip on the Coast Starlight. So until Vancouver or Portland get MLB teams, the M's players will continue to find train travel a unique experience.
