We are big fans of the restored Harvey Houses, notably the one at La Posada in Winslow and the one at Las Vegas, NM soon to be restored by the same owner. I'm not sure if it's still in operation but the Harvey House lunch counter in KC was great a few years ago.

I like the idea of a pub in the Fred Harvey room. I hope that comes about.
The one station/Harvey house I always hoped would be resurrected is the one in Barstow, Ca.
However, the SW Chief arrives at 9:56 PM, eastbound, and 3:39AM, westbound. That may have something to do with why a revival of the station/Harvey House wasn't considered. It is now a chamber of commerce and visitor center.

This is great news regarding the restaurant space in Los Angeles Union Station.
If this happens I believe I'll book a flight to Los Angeles and catch the Fly-Away bus to Union Station for a leisurely meal with evening departure eastward on #2.

If you haven't done so, dining at La Posada in Winslow is a peak experience.
All the public areas of this hotel have been lovingly restored and are a joy to explore.
A path from La Posada leads to the Amtrak platform. The hotel fronts Old Route 66. Only negative? Lacks a swimming pool.

Don, we got the restaurant's owner/chef, John Sharp, regular newsletter. Because he had so many inquiries he wanted to let all know he would stay at La Posada when the Harvey House in Las Vegas, NM, La Castanda, is renovated by the Alan Affeldt, owner of both hotels. Good news. For us, this is certainly a good reason to keep the SWC on its present route. It's a pleasant day trip between the two - although the old schedule works better.

The Harvey House grill space in Kansas City failed, it is now the home of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce.
That said, the Westport Room has been renovated and is now Pierpont's Restaurant, a multi-level dining experience.
Frankly, though, in KC foodies are best served going to any of several superb restaurants in town: - Affare, 19th and Main - Michael Smith's Extra Virgin, the other side of 19th and Main - Rieger Hotel, 20th and Main - Golden Ox, KC Livestock Exchange Building, West Bottoms - Fiorella's Jack Stack BBQ, multiple locations including the Freight House. - Cafe des Amis, Parkville - The Corner Restaurant (B/L only), Westport
and a host of other places.

I have great inexpensive mideastern food down by the SS Arabia in Kansas City, which was my favorite thing I saw there. (train station was 2nd favorite but I disliked how empty it was when I was there). I had really disappointing BBQ at a place near the train station, should have gone down to 18th & Vine or wherever that other famous place is!

I love Las Vegas, NV. Such an interesting and historic town. The town square area takes you back to the old west.

That you would leave Stroud’s off your KC foodie list is a simply grievous oversight. That alone is worth a stop in KC.
Stroud’s ("We choke our own chickens") is the only place I've found that can make panfried chicken as good as my mom's. Its gravy too is out of this world good.
I used to enjoy the Stroud's on believe it was 85th Street or something like that south of downtown. Was sorry that that atmospheric location closed.

Thought I had a photo of the Las Vegas square but couldn't find it. We stayed at the Plaza hotel there and had a great time. It was old and quirky and right in the square. For some reason the town is off the tourist path. Maybe that will change with the La Castanda. While it's not evident in the photo, it needs lots of work but might turn out nicer than La Posada. The owner also bought the Plaza to use as his home/office while renovations begin.
As the photo shows, there was yard in front of the hotel and station (in decent condition) and passing track still in place. But it's lacking the the 70+ freights a day at La Posada!

The Posada in Las Vegas will have an advantage over the one in Winslow -- the large and hungry foodie population of Santa Fe a short drive away. That should keep the dining room busy, if marketed properly. Given the same owner, am sure the food quality will be excellent.
Sorry that I didn't go into the Plaza Hotel while there. Knew Teddy Roosevelt had had some sort of gathering of ex-Rough Riders at the hotel.

Haven't booked the trip yet, but will be traveling eastbound, which properly isn't timed right. Nevertheless, will be sure to reserve westbound or via a connection in KC next time. I like that the SWC offers somewhat different scenery on its second day in each direction.
Don't feel sorry for me this time, though. This trip will include a nice stopover at some restaurants in New Orleans!

Don -- if you enjoy jazz, I would recommend stopping at Fritzels's at 733 Bourbon Street, New Orleans (probably 3-4 blocks off Canal)-- they advertise themseleves as a "European jazz pub," and there is no cover charge! I stopped there on my New Orleans layover during my trip in June -- great place!! You can sit at the bar and drink German beer while listening to New Orleans jazz!!
NO now has a light rail streetcar system, and you can get to Bourbon Street and the Vieux Carre directly from New Orleans Union Station -- just be sure to have the EXACT change for the streetcar or they won't even let you board (I believe the fare was $1.25 in June). With the light rail, you don't have to walk through possibly dangerous locations.
