A couple of weeks old but (downloadable PDF) this press release from Amtrak outlines some additional services and mandatory reservations for some trains on Thanksgiving day.

I see that my train on Thanksgiving, the Coast Starlight from LA to Oakland at least, is sold out in coach. Roomettes still available though.

On our Surfliner trip last Friday there were a number of reminder announcements made about ALL Surfliners being by reservation only this week and that the various "code share" tickets (Coaster, etc.) would not be valid.

Mr. Mayo, I guess it would be a "crunch" for you, Mrs., and two kids in a Roomette, but if Amtrak is how you choose to go, it would be doable (you and one critter on one seat, Mrs.and the other opposite).

Certainly would be family togetherness, but that is what our American holiday is all about.

For myself, it's off to Indianapolis Thanx morning with dear unrelated friends. Uh, "don't think" I'm about to consider Iowa Pacific or Amtrak. Red Lex gets me there on my schedule in 3'20"; and not 5'.

"Red Lex"?

$160 for a day roomette. Not in my budget I'm afraid, though granted we get lunch and dinner for two in that. Plus we're travelling with friends so I'm hoping we can spend much of the time in the lounge car - though no prizes for how busy that will be.

Having been up close and personal a couple of times with Mr. Norman, I shall translate:

"Red Lex" is his red Lexus automobile, vice "Lex Noir," the black one that served him so well for many years.

While I do not normally respond to postings that quote a preceding message in its entirety when only one sentence relates to the author's inquiry, Red Lex is the name I have given my Riveria Red 2013 Lexus GS-350 that will be with me for a while in that it now has 31K on the clock.

When I know of folk around here who think nothing of driving vehicles with 200K on their clocks, he has a way to go with me- even if the most I've ever had on an auto is 98K.

Slight correction to my earlier post. $160 is the cost for roomette including rail fare for one. I recall paying around $60 so it's around $100 for room and 2x2 meals - not a bad price actually.
