I find great inconsistency in reading various articles on the Jan 22 deadline. One article suggested Oct as the deadline, another said real ID will not be absolutely necessary until 2020.

I'm on Big Bird to Miami Jan 27, and was wondering if I were going to break out my Passport for the journey as well as change my Traveler ID at United's site back to passport from license.

It looks like, Mr. Norman, Florida is compliant while Illinois is "extended" or, from another website, "under review", whatever that means.

During one of the TSA meltdowns a couple years ago we got the Know Traveler ID that lets us use the Pre-check line through security. It required a visit to a TSA office, our passport, a short interview and $80. But it’s nice to usually speed through security. Presumably that’s sufficient for the new requirements.

For a while I had PRe Check gratis, but during '15 when I flew on JetBlue rather than my usual United (they don't serve JFK), Pre-Check "vamanosed".
Of my eight flights last year, five were forward of the curtain, which part of what you're paying for, is "go to the head of the TSA class". Also, being 76, I've outgrown taking my shoes off. Just as well, as I only wear laced shoes when flying (I cringe when I see people boarding wearing flip-flops. If there were to be a survivable incident, the impact would still likely rip that footwear off one's feet. Somehow, with the Attendants yelling "Run", I think I'd like secure footwear doing so through a debris field).
Nice while it lasted, but I'll live without.
But come two weeks from this Saturday, if TSA says you don't have acceptable ID, I'll be less than happy. Maybe I should bring my Passport "just in case".

Think about it: This should scare everybody. Internal passports are the tools of dictators. We should be able to move about freely in our own country without the government having its nose in it.

Another bit of confusion. Some websites say that a Real ID will be a drivers license with a gold star in the upper right corner of the license. Do you have to apply for such a license, or will compliant states automatically send you a new driver license with the gold star? Or, will they just send you the gold star? Also, there are 5 non-compliant states which have issued gold star driver licenses. It sort of seems like each state does its own thing.
I have flown Alaska Airlines, a number of times, out of Portland, Oregon. I was able to get Pre-Checked on one occasion, even though I didn't ask for it. It was great, no need to toss your shoes, belt, wallet, cellphone, mouthwash, and chewing gum into the plastic bucket. Just zipped through. However, with future flights out of Portland, I did have to go through the rigmarole.

Been worried and scared for some years now, as this poor, suffering country turns more and more into a police state / totalitarian regime.
Our Founding Fathers would be appalled.
There is absolutely NO need at ALL for ANY of this "Real ID" or TSA garbage. That is one big reason why I refuse to fly any more. My last flight was 21 years ago, and I refuse to subject myself to this stuff -- and all other other unpleasant things that make flying nowadays an ordeal, and not half the fun of the vacation.
The California DMV says this on their website:

> - Drive > - Apply for or receive federal benefits (Veterans Affairs, Social Security Administration, etc.) > - Enter a federal facility that does not require ID (i.e. a post office) > - Visit a hospital or receive life-saving services
I wonder how long any of those exceptions will last?
In the mean time, those of you who want to fly, even domestically, probably need to get this "Real ID" thing.

A week ago Saturday when I went through TSA at ORD on my way to Miami, I facetiously said as I presented my Illinois License, "hope I don't have to go home and get my Passport". "Nothing to worry about, Sir; you're good until 2022". My present License expires in '21, so by then laggard Illinois will have hopefully decided to "get with the program".
