Fabulous book so far: Lincoln on the Verge, very readable, quite fascinating, especially for train and history buffs.

Sojourner, what is the title of the book you read?
I once read a book, titled "The Hour of Peril" about the attempt to assassinate Lincoln in Baltimore, when he was on the way to his inauguration. Maryland was pro Confederate at the time just before the civil war. Lincoln advisers decided to allow the train transfer, through Baltimore, to be a day early to avoid the pro south mobs.

The title is Lincoln on the Verge, author is Ted Widmer. It's simply fabulous. I can't recommend it enough to any train or history buff. It's nonfiction, but it's suspenseful and profoundly moving in spots, and the relevance to today is sadlty ironic. The descriptions of trains and train travel, and of cities like Cincinnati and Baltimore, are fantastic. (The dangers presented by Baltimore, which you mention, are a large part of the suspense.)
